What is the camshaft used for?

The heart of the engine and the secret to mechanical performance

In the complex ecosystem of an engine, the camshaft plays a strategic role: it is the component that sets the pace of combustion. To define it simply as a mechanical part would be reductive; it is, in effect, the conductor that determines the efficiency and power of an engine.

The strategic role: beyond mechanics

The camshaft is the fundamental component for managing intake and exhaust flows, allowing the synchronized opening and closing of the valves. It is precisely through the optimization of this process that it is possible to increase the power of an engine in a purely mechanical way.

Its applications span different engine architectures:

  • 4-stroke engines: both gasoline and diesel versions.
  • 2-stroke engines: specifically in unidirectional variants.
  • High-performance applications: used to maximize performance (as in applications developed for customers such as Ducati).

In its operating cycle, the camshaft works in constant synergy with other critical components, such as tappets, rocker arms, and cups.

Production excellence and technical specifications

At Gentilini Power Train, camshaft production follows standards of absolute precision, with the ability to manufacture customized components within a wide range of dimensions:

  • Length: from 40 mm to 1000 mm.
  • Radius: from 0 to 160 mm.
  • Maximum concavity: radius 50 mm.

Cutting-edge materials and treatments

The choice of material and subsequent heat treatment are essential to ensure resistance to cyclic stresses. We use a wide range of options:

  • Materials: Bar steel, stamped steel, special steels, gray and spheroidal cast iron, up to high-quality controlled-cooling chilled cast iron.
  • Heat Treatments: Tempering processes (including vacuum tempering), carburizing, gas nitriding, and ion nitriding to ensure maximum surface hardness.

The Innovation of DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) Coating

To push durability and performance beyond conventional limits, we have developed, in collaboration with specialized partners, the DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating system.
The application of this coating guarantees immediate competitive advantages:

  • Wear reduction: drastic reduction in sliding friction.
  • Increased performance: greater overall mechanical efficiency.
  • Superior longevity: significant increase in component service life.

Versatile application: from racing to industry

Thanks to the know-how acquired over decades of activity, Gentilini Power Train provides solutions for the most demanding sectors globally:

  • Racing and motorbikes
  • Aviation and boating
  • Automotive
  • Industrial automation
